Carnivals

Elephant ears, corn dogs and the time-honored tradition of trying to win the biggest teddy bear for your date (but knowing she loves you enough to settle for the little stuffed porcupine). The summer fair or carnival is a symphony of recaptured youth for all of us who went to them as kids and the perfect chance to prove that game of ring toss who the boss is this time.

Don't Forget:

  • Cash
  • Alka-Seltzer
  • A-Game

Summer Movies / Concerts In The Park

Check with your local community paper for what's playing. An evening under the stars with a long-lost favorite movie or musician goes perfectly with a bottle of wine in a picnic basket. Let the fireflies light up your evening and allow the moment to let you forget about the work-a-day worrying.

    Don't Forget:

  • Bug-spray
  • Open mind (If your date likes what's playing more than you do)

    Day-trip to the country

Grab some bicycles, a couple of backpacks or maybe just a bottle of sunblock and a good book. It's hard to do a day out in the country wrong, really. Especially for city-dwellers and those of us in the endless sprawl of suburbia, the chance to experience the some fresh air and happy-to-know-ya-type personalities can go a long way on helping us relax and enjoy the company of one another.

    Don't Forget:

  • Antihistamines
  • Trunk space (Your date might be a closet antique-junkie)

    Beach

There's a body of water within driving distance of your house. Grab the following – your significant other, drinks and drink cozies, hat, sunglasses, portable chairs and a towel. Put in the trunk of your car and drive to that body of water early in the day. Get out, grab stuff and saut矡t summer temperatures until satisfied. Return home and find a creative way to get the sand off one another.

    Don't Forget:

  • Sunscreen
  • To check the weather

    Your new backyard pool

This is where the staycation gets a much-needed dose of Love Guy creativity. Bear with us. For a $20 investment, you can beat the summer heat right in the convenience of your own yard. Yes, people may walk by and look at you in what looks like disbelief. It's actually jealousy, and don't think for a moment that they're not secretly stealing the idea. The best part? Travel times and inflated food and drink prices are a thing of the past.

    Don't Forget:

  • A kiddie pool
  • Drink-umbrellas for "That Resort Look"
